Kristen Olinger

Southern California based artist, Kristen Olinger has blended her passions of photography, fashion, architecture and design to bring awareness to rare diseases and disability. She hopes to break stereotypes and infuse life into an often depicted sterile subject matter. Her goal is to reduce stigma about openly discussing health and change perceptions about what illness looks like.

About Kristen’s work “Heart Issues”:

I created this piece as a way to come to terms with the many cardiac diagnoses I had received in my 30s. To everyone else from the outside I ‘looked fine.’ I chose the mask to symbolise you never really know what is below the surface. For years I hid behind it afraid to share my pain. The heart outside the body is to make the invisible visible. The detachment I sometimes feel knowing I live in a body that just doesn't function the way it’s meant to– the vulnerability of exposing that truth. Finally brave enough to step forward, I hope to help someone else who can help someone else.
