Iluá Hauck da Silva

Iluá Hauck da Silva was born in Campinas, Brazil, and has been based in London since 1997. She received her BA in Art History from Goldsmiths' University of London, her MA in Christianity and the Arts from King's College London (in association with the National Gallery, London), and is currently undertaking her doctorate in Fine Art at the University of East London.

Hauck da Silva’s solo exhibitions include The National Trust Sutton House, The College of Optometrists, The Royal Parks, and Museu Padre Lima, Brazil. She has also participated in various group shows across Europe, Brazil, and the USA, including the Royal West of England Academy, The Royal Landscape, Augustijnenklooster, Belgium, and Estonia Art Week. The artist has received funding from the Arts Council England, and has been nominated for several art prizes, the most important being the Aesthetica Art prize for which she was longlisted in 2012, 2018, and 2022.

Glass, drawing, body casting, and digital techniques are some of the media Hauck da Silva works with. Her background in art history and theology means she often revisits and subverts Christian themes and iconography as well as Greek mythology and Classical sculpture.

She is also deeply inspired by her upbringing in a medical family; since 2017 she has been making anatomical glass hearts and heart drawings. In 2018 she began to fuse anatomical and botanical imagery, focusing on the heart, brain, liver, and the reproductive systems.

About Iluá’s works “Rooted”, “Heart Fields Forever”, “Apple, Heart, Heart, Fig”:

I have been making glass hearts and heart drawings since 2017. In 2022, I began creating images of the heart merged with botanical elements, fusing human and plant life. I employ such visual fusion to symbolise the dissolution of the schism between human and non-human life and the reintegration of of all life forms without hierarchy. I use black paper for a dramatic effect, alluding to the work of botanical artist Mary Delany (1700-1788), and use a surrealist visual strategy.
